Purpose: The focus of this activity is to take a look at how media continues to support the stigma around mental illness and how media portrays an individual with mental illness. This activity will motivate youth to discuss in length how media has a major impact on the stigma surrounding mental illness.
 
Age: This activity is to be done with children 14 years and older.
 
Time length: 45 minutes
 
Environment: To be done in a classroom setting. 

Analysis of Media

Preparation: Collect newspapers or magazines that focus on events that involves a person with mental illness.  Include as well bristle board, scissors and glue for each group.
Instructions: Have youth break into groups of 4 people. Explain to each group to go through the newspaper and magazines to find any articles, pictures, headlines that depict an event of a person with mental illness. Further explain on one side of the bristle board have the negative article, pictures and headlines and incorporate them as a collage. On the other side of the bristle board include all the positive articles, pictures and headlines and incorporate them as a collage. Once they are done, have them hang up their collages on the wall. Discussion questions:
  1. Discuss how it felt to see the way media portray the stigma around mental illness?
  2. Do you think media supports the stigma around mental illness?
  3. Do you think there is a way media can stop this stigma and promote the education of mental health?
